Microsoft To Support Windows 10 Office Apps Until 2028

Editor

Microsoft has announced a three-year extension of support for Microsoft 365 (also known as Office apps) on Windows 10.

This move gives Windows 10 users including many in Malaysia, more time to continue using Office productivity tools such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) with security updates and bug fixes.

What's Changing With Windows 10 Support?

Microsoft's original plan was to end support for Office apps on Windows 10 by 2025. However, the company will continue to provide security updates, bug fixes, and general maintenance for Office apps on Windows 10 until 14 October 2028.

This is a change from their previous strong push for everyone to upgrade to Windows 11, however the tech company says the delay will ensure a smooth transition to the new OS while still keeping their systems secure.

Apps such as Word will continue to work after Windows 10 reaches end of support, however, Microsoft advises that doing so may lead to potential performance and reliability issues down the line.

Why The Push For Windows 11?

Microsoft has been strongly urging users to upgrade to Windows 11, even calling 2025 "the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh", likely because its AI-powered Copilot features are exclusive to the newest OS, The Verge reported. However, those sticking with Windows 10 will have the option of paid "Extended Security Updates," even if they don't buy a new PC.
