Malaysia is taking significant strides to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by fostering collaborations with neighboring land countries such as Singapore and Thailand.
Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore, Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, shared that this initiative aims to create a more robust and interconnected EV infrastructure across the region, promoting sustainable transportation and economic growth.
Regional Collaboration on The Horizon

A key focus of Malaysia's strategy is the expansion of EV charging infrastructure beyond its borders. By working closely with countries like Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia aims to establish a seamless network of charging stations, facilitating easier cross-border travel for EV users and encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles throughout the region.
At the last leg of ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 (AUD2025), themed "Uniting Automotive Across Borders", Datuk Dr Azfar shared the event as a testament to the region's collective commitment to sustainable transportation, uniting government agencies, industry players, and civil society.
AUD2025 is a 9,000km convoy journey that was first commenced in Jakarta on 22 April 2025 with the Proton e.MAS 7, Malaysia’s first electric vehicle (EV) and the no. 1 EV in Malaysia for three consecutive months. The ceremony serves to highlight the country's advancements in EV technology and its dedication to regional collaboration.
Policy Initiatives and Economic Integration

Malaysia has proposed 18 Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) for 2025, including the development of Asean EV Policy and Guidelines. These initiatives aim to harmonize regulations, standards, and incentives across member states, fostering a conducive environment for EV industry growth and integration within the Asean economic bloc.
Through the initiatives, opportunities include increased accessibility to EVs and improved infrastructure, ultimately making electric vehicles a more viable option.
The local industry will also stand to benefit from enhanced regional cooperation, potentially increased investments, job creation, and technological advancements in the SEA region which is home to approximately 699 million people.
