First Impression: Samsung Galaxy S25 (base)—Looks The Same, Acts… Maybe Not The Same

Why fix the unbroken?

The long-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S25 series was finally launched at 2 a.m. MYT this morning. At the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event in San Jose, California, Samsung unveiled all three models of its new flagship smartphone—all of which come with advanced Galaxy AI!

We managed to get an early sneak peek of the Samsung Galaxy S25 (base), and here’s our first impression.

Design & Build

The Galaxy S25 retains Samsung’s signature design from the past few years. It features a lightweight aluminium chassis and Corning Gorilla Glass for enhanced durability.

Available in seven colours, the sleek design mirrors that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S24, but it introduces subtle refinements, like a new camera ring design with thinner profiles and a slight lip for added protection.

Under The Hood

To start the series off on the best note, the Galaxy S25 (base) is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Qualcomm’s latest chipset, which promises significant improvements in performance and thermal efficiency.

Paired with 12GB of RAM and starting at 128GB of storage, the base model should handle extensive multitasking, gaming, and productivity tasks with ease.

Of course, we can’t forget Galaxy AI—since debuting in the Galaxy S24 series last year, Galaxy AI quickly set the tone for AI smartphones for the rest of the year. We’re expecting the Galaxy S25 series to do the same.

One of the most interesting new AI features that caught our eye was the Now Bar, a feature that helps declutter notifications on your phone. Samsung has worked closely with Google to bring the best of Gemini, enhanced with Galaxy AI, to their new Galaxy lineup.

On the battery front, Samsung sticks with its tried-and-true approach, maintaining the 4,000mAh battery and 25W fast charging seen in previous models.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S25’s camera system is still the same as its predecessor, but thanks to the upgrades in the processor and enhanced Galaxy AI features, you’ll get an optimised version of what already worked last year.

The base model features a 50MP primary sensor and a 12MP selfie camera, enhanced by AI-based image processing for clearer, more vibrant shots. It also offers AI-powered enhancements and advanced ray-tracing effects, bringing a cinematic touch to mobile videography.

Price and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy S25 (base) will come in three configurations:

  • 12GB RAM + 256GB ROM - RM3,999
  • 12GB RAM + 512GB ROM - RM4,599

Samsung is starting the year off strong with their AI-heavy releases right before January ends—though they have kept the hardware upgrades very incremental across the board for the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.

We’ll be publishing our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S25 (base) soon, so keep an eye out for it!
