It’s big, it’s bold, it makes a rather large statement — it’s the JBL Xtreme 4, a very large twin of the JBL Flip 6. Like the Flip 6, it’s designed for outdoor adventures or parties that need a big, booming soundtrack to go along with. In fact, it even comes with a strap for easy carrying!
So, after spending some time with the JBL Xtreme 4, here’s what we think about it!

Design & Build
The JBL Xtreme 4 is built to withstand almost anything you throw at it—figuratively, of course. Its rugged exterior comes with an IP67 rating, making it both water and dust-resistant. If you’re planning a beach day, pool party, or dusty camping trip, this speaker can take it all in stride.
At first glance, the design reminds me of the JBL Flip 6, only supersized. While the detachable strap makes it more convenient to carry, its large size and weight make it less portable in the traditional sense. Honestly, I wouldn’t dream of lugging this on a hiking trip unless I had a pack mule—it's far better suited for glamping or road trips.
On the practical side, the Xtreme 4 has just one port—a USB-C, which doubles as an input for charging the speaker and an output for charging other devices. The power bank feature is a lifesaver when your phone’s battery runs low while you’re out!
Performance
The JBL Xtreme 4 practically commands attention, and not just in looks. Thanks to its AI Sound Boost technology, the Xtreme 4 adapts to various music genres, ensuring that mids and highs are crisp and clear, especially at moderate volume levels (40-70%).
Push the volume higher, and the bass kicks in with satisfying punchiness—perfect for filling a room or outdoor space. However, I noticed that clarity starts to falter at maximum volume, so keeping it within the moderate range is your best bet for optimal audio quality.
On its own, the JBL Xtreme 4 packs enough power to properly fill a large-sized living room. For outdoor uses, it’s great for medium-sized parties or a camping trip, though if your surroundings are more chaotic, you might find yourself only feeling the bass beats, but this is forgivable, really. On the whole, the Xtreme 4 holds its ground volume and clarity-wise.
Besides great audio, the JBL Xtreme 4 also has some really great features like the Auracast-Compatible Bluetooth that ensures seamless pairing with multiple speakers, allowing you to share a connection with other JBL speakers — yes, the JBL Flip 6 works with it too — and have your music broadcasted further or in multiple rooms.
With the JBL Portable app, you can tweak sound profiles using EQ presets or go fully custom, tailoring the audio to your preferences. Lastly, the Playtime Boost Mode lets you squeeze every last drop out of the battery by disabling EQ settings. While this does extend playtime, it’s a trade-off if you value sound customization.
Battery Life
If there’s one feature that sets the Xtreme 4 apart, it’s the 24-hour battery life. That’s a full 12 hours more than the much, much smaller JBL Flip 6. This longevity makes it a perfect companion for weekend trips or all-day events where outlets are scarce.
The built-in power bank feature is another win for practicality. While charging my smartphone via the USB-C port, I didn’t feel any noticeable drop in the speaker’s performance.
Verdict
The JBL Xtreme 4 delivers on JBL’s legacy of creating reliable, high-performance speakers. It’s perfect for those who prioritize durability, long battery life, and versatile functionality. That said, it’s not for everyone.
If you’re someone who values true portability, the size and weight might be a dealbreaker. For my needs, I found myself leaning more toward the JBL Flip 6—smaller, lighter, and capable of producing similar audio quality in less demanding scenarios.
That said, the Xtreme 4’s extra features, like the power bank capability and extended playtime, make it an excellent choice for camping trips, road adventures, or even hosting gatherings at home. If you’re after a speaker that’s more than just loud and can hold its own in rugged conditions, the JBL Xtreme 4 deserves a spot on your shortlist.
