Design & Comfort

Before we start, we have to say that the HyperX Cloud Mini is actually aimed for aspiring kid gamers between 8 to 12 years old. So, just to be clear, we are out of that age range. Moreover, its colour options are quite colourful to attract young eyes.

However, we are advocators for ear health and that we have small heads as we are tiny humans. If you are getting this headphone with the intention to buy it for a child, or for someone that's approximately 5 feet tall or below, this review would serve you.

Now, to start; HyperX Cloud Mini comes in wired and wireless versions. Here, our review unit is the wired version (3.5mm audio jack compatible with various devices), therefore we are going to assume that our audio experience would be different to the wireless HyperX Cloud Mini.

This pair is an on-ear headset with closed-back design, complemented with memory foam ear cushions and an adjustable headband for comfort. With its largely plastic construction, the headset is also very lightweight at 130g, ensuring you don't get head fatigue fast.

There's also a tuck-away boom mic with an electret condenser and is omnidirectional, fitted with a flip-to-mute function. And for more convenience, there are memory foam ear cushions and an adjustable headband to ensure a snug fit.

Moreover, the rotating earcups rotate to allow for easy storage and comfort when you let it rest around your neck.

Performance

There are several things that makes the HyperX Cloud Mini worthy of your attention, and would do best for gaming (of which, the headset is compatible with PCs, Chromebooks, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, PlayStation and Xbox controllers).

Standard Headset Drivers

HyperX Cloud Mini utilises a modest 30mm dynamic neodymium drivers delivering immersive audio. It's capable of delivering frequencies between 20Hz to 20,000Hz.

For something that's aimed at kids and possibly for adults with smaller heads, that 20khz range is actually standard for headphones and would do to serve you well if not primarily for music-consumption.

Soundtracks at Safe Volume Levels

The most prominent feature would be the headset's volume limitation, which ensures audio levels do not go over 85dB; particularly useful for ensuring a kid does not rupture their ears during extended use. There's hardly any issue with us hearing immersive sounds and most music genres, meaning you'll be satisfied with the volume. Casual listening is alright too.

Not the Best for Music

Speaking of which, heavy music listening with it is not our preferece. The audio profile is neutral but lacking in bass. Songs can be muted for both the highs and lows, making instrument notes sound muffled and not too clear. Not only that; due to its on-ear earcups, there's no music isolation with this headset, making it difficult to enjoy in noisy environments.

Good news is that voices are clear, which means you'll likely have no problem with listening to story narration or chatting with your friends over games at all.

Verdict - Who is This For?

The HyperX Cloud Mini headset (wired) retails for RM137.90.

This headset is truly best for a child within the recommended age range of 8 - 12, given its striking colour and decent quality. Its safety features, comfort, and affordability are the mainr easons to consider the headset. For small-sized adults wanting to seek a budget friendly and lightweight headset, this is alright especially if you want a backup headset.

However, if you have the budget and are looking for a more all-rounder headphones to do most things especially for music-listening, it makes more sense to buy professional audio brand headphones. Due to its size and volume limitations, it will likely not meet most requirements for adult listeners, even jsut for immersive gaming or multimedia experiences.

    Pros

    • Volume cap protects hearing.
    •  Lightweight and well-padded for extended use.
    • Simple controls and easy setup.

    Cons

    • The expandable headband has its limits; may not fit comfortably on kids with larger heads.
    • Hardly any passive noise cancellation due to on-ear design.
