The real difficulty in cultivating good haircare habits is probably patience. As in, how much patience and time would you be willing to contribute in order to enjoy the fruits?
For example, blow drying hair with cold wind is an open secret that we should all strive for. But how many of us decided to blast warm or hot wind after 2 minutes of 'waiting' for it to dry? Not to mention, when you're in a rush to style your hair and look presentable as fast as you can?
Dyson has created the perfect opportunity for us all to indulge in healthier haircare habits in the form of a quick hairdrying-styling tool: the Dyson Airstrait Straightener.

- About Dyson Airstrait Straightener
This hair straightener is designed to dry wet hair while straightening with strong hot wind and no heated ceramic plates. Its aim was to cut down 25% of hair styling time and no damage from heated metals.
Like the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer, the Airstrait has heat technology which constantly regulates airflow — up to 16 times per second — so that the wind is constantly at the perfect temperature to prevent damage. Moreover, it also has Dyson's proprietary Hyperdymium motor that can generate very strong, 3.6kPa of air pressure, in order to dry the hair safely.
The finish result of using the Dyson Airstrait on the hair would be a natural shiny finish.
With temperature settings available in 80°C, 110°C and 140°C, the Airstrait can also be used to achieve a blow-out look for various hair lengths and texture from short to long. One can also gently pre-dry roots for volume by usingits lock feature on the 'arms' of the straightener.
The Airstrait also has an Airflow feature which can be activated when needed. It's when the machine senses that hair is between arms, the straightener will automatically drop to low airflow in order to achieve a quieter, more comfortable and efficient styling for the user.
- Why get this?
- The Dyson Airstrait is certainly fast; drying performance can go from "dripping wet" to "dry styled" hair in 15 minutes
- Haircare aspect is also great for those who needs it; it can tame frizzy hair well and for long (saying this for a high-humidity country like Malaysia)
- Easy to use especially for those with poor hand-to-brain coordination
Dyson Airstrait is great for those with fine and thin to normal hair thickness. That's because in our tests, to get a fully straight hair look, 3 passes are recommended. This means thicker hair types would achieve the intended look with in about the same time span with regular styling options.
As per Dyson's recommendation to slowly go over the hair per pass, patience is still required to style the hair. Thankfully, our expectations were met with the fact that going from damp to dry hair is relatively fast; we achieve a full straight hair look in under 15 minutes as compared to our tester's average of 20 minutes — about 25% less time used, as advertised by Dyson.
We also enjoyed that Airstrait helps to tame frizzy flyaways. After testing out the product on one night and going to sleep after, hair was still straight and as frizzy-less the next day.
The Airstrait is also comfortable to hold, ergonomic-wise. However, we wish for it to be lighter since most of us would aim to get our hair done fast, and holding up the product for 15 minutes or longer would still be tiring.
Another quip we had was the fact that with a regular hair straightener, we could actually "curl" our hair with specific tutorial process. But with wind always turned on, it's not possible with the Airstrait.
Understanding how the Airstrait works; if Dyson could somehow engineer the next generation to minimize wind and have more heat, it would be interesting to witness an Airstrait that could mimic the hair-styling oppotunities one can get with a regular, heated-plating hair straightener.
For a price of RM2,599, the Dyson Airstrait is certainly not cheap for what it's designed to do. Therefore if you're someone who loves having straight hair daily and wants to maintain great haircare, it's worth it to invest.

- First Impression & Performance
Upon holding the device, we were pleasant at the fact that it is pretty light. What might annoy some users is that the Airstrait is a bit long and bulky for a heat tool compared to the average. If you have short arms, do go to the actual store to get a look and feel before buying.
Moreover, knowing that Dyson heat tools usually come with a case so it was quite surprising to see that the Airstrait is available just bare on its own besides a heat mat. This might be good news for those who likes to travel with a hair straightener.
However, be warned that the power adapter is quite big, heavy and bulky that it doesn’t seem too user-friendly for travelling. The adapter actually weighs down a lot and would be possibly unusable for pocketed sockets usually found in hotel vanities. If you need to use the item when you travel and in a hotel, make sure there's a chair or table to support the adapter.
In essence, the Airstrait is pretty easy to use; manuals are simplified, with status of the item displayed in an LCD screen. While we enjoyed the fast wet-to-dry hair state, do take note that you will still need to pre-dry the scalp as its design doesn't dry the scalp altogether. So take advantage of the lock feature to create a focused air channel directed at the scalp.
Another quip we were wary of is the fact that "curling" the ends of the hair for a bounce is possible, but it won't be defined. So locking in styles with a hairspray is still needed.
