Back in February, The Information reported that OpenAI, the company behind the AI chatbot ChatGPT, is considering entering the search engine industry. The search engine was rumoured to be reliant, to a certain extent, on Bing by Microsoft.

While this has not been confirmed, an X post hints that the ChatGPT-powered search engine might hit the market next week.

Pete Huang, a well-known influencer known for his powerful discussions on artificial intelligence on X (previously known as Twitter), recently uploaded a cryptic tweet that suggests the search.chatgpt.com domain will be released on May 9th.In addition, Reddit user u/halfstar has said that both a search.chatgpt.com domain and an SSL cert have been created as well.

Currently, the address just shows a blank black webpage with the words not found in the top left, which is not your regular 404 Not Found error message, which tells us that the webpage is, in fact, available and registered, just not released for public.

While it was reported that ChatGPT could harness Bing’s pool of data to generate responses for its search engine, as of the time of writing, we are not yet sure how exactly the proposed GPT Chat-based OpenAI search engine will look or what it would even be named, if there will be any in the end.

It’s also worth mentioning what Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, said about implementing search in the company. In a podcast conducted by Lex Fridman, Mr. Altman remarked that “nobody has been able to figure out how to combine large language models (LLMs) with search. I would like to work on this because I think it is interesting.”

Currently, it’s not clear what search.chatgpt.com can be—will it launch a new era in search services? Can it be hailed as an AI-oriented creation of up-to-date times that may give competition to Google Search or Bing? There's certainly much to look forward for in both AI and search engine industry.
