ASICS SportStyle is proud to announce the launch of the GEL-KAYANO™ LEGACY sneaker, a fitting tribute to the 30th anniversary of the iconic GEL-KAYANO™ series. This release not only celebrates the series but also pays homage to the technological advancements that have defined it over the years.
The GEL-KAYANO™ series was born from the creative genius of designer Toshikazu Kayano, who joined ASICS in the late 1980s. In 1993, he introduced the world to the GEL-KAYANO™ series, a collection rooted in protective technologies inspired by the resilient armour of stag beetles. This philosophy remains a defining feature of the series, even three decades later. Kayano-san continued to create 13 distinct silhouettes within the series before passing the torch in 2008.
Reflecting on the journey, Toshikazu Kayano remarked, "When I first started designing the GEL-KAYANO™ series for running, I never would've imagined that there would be 30 different models across a 30-year timeframe—let alone reach the sneaker space."
The ASICS SportStyle design team paid homage to the GEL-KAYANO™ series by drawing inspiration from key milestones. Beginning with the GEL-KAYANO™ 14 as the foundation, they incorporated design elements from eight other iconic iterations within the GEL-KAYANO™ series.
Each colorway in the collection draws inspiration from the core colors that have been a constant throughout the GEL-KAYANO™ series. The first colorway showcases a predominantly white base with striking blue, red, and black accents. The second colorway pays homage to the series' frequent use of silver during the mid and late 2000s.
