Software and Set Up
While the Huawei App is not available for download on Google Play Store, Android users can still get a Huawei Watch. All you need to do is scan the QR code displayed on the smartwatch (it is also given inside the box), and you will be redirected to the Huawei website. From there, you can download the Huawei Health App.
For iOS users you can just scan the QR code to download the app through App Store. Setting up the Huawei Watch 4 Pro is pretty straightforward because navigating the Huawei Health App is super easy. After downloading the app, all you need to do is pair the watch with your phone, and you're good to go!
Design and Display
Honestly, Huawei has outdone themselves with the design of the Huawei Watch 4 Pro. The box already looks amazing with a premium black look and accentuating gold text. Inside, the Huawei Watch 4 Pro is certainly eye-catching, with a silver metallic case made from an Aerospace-Grade titanium material and a classy dark brown leather strap. On the sides, there is a rotatable crown and a Quick Bar button.
Combined, they give a sophisticated and luxurious look that will certainly appeal to any watch aficionado. Besides that, the Huawei Watch 4 Pro has a 1.5" AMOLED display which is colourful, vibrant, and bright enough to see in direct sunlight. The watch has more than enough watch faces to suit any look. Most watch faces are free, but you can also buy watch faces through the Huawei Health app.
The controls of the Huawei Watch 4 Pro are pretty simple: you can swipe up and down, tap to select and swipe right to go back. To access the apps on the watch press the crown and rotate it if you want a bigger or smaller view. The crown also works as a scroll for menus and a volume rocker when playing music or during a call. The Quick Bar button below the crown works as quick and easier access to Call, Health Glance, and Workout apps, which is also customizable to your quick access needs.
The HUAWEI Watch 4 Pro may be the perfect accessory to complement your style, but man, is it heavy. The actual body of the Watch weighs a hefty 65g, which is already pretty noticeable, but what's even more noticeable is the sheer size of the watch. It certainly feels durable enough to handle some drops without getting damaged, but it will look ridiculous on smaller-wristed friends.
Performance and Features
Watch Face Feature
Huawei Watch 4 Pro comes with a default watch face called ‘Planet Quest’. It shows you the planet Earth with the moon next to it. My favourite thing about this watch face is that when you rotate the crown on the watch, you can get a simulated overview of the earth and how it looks at different times. Also, when on the homepage of the watch, click on the moon and you’re able to check the weather of your location throughout the day!
Notifications and Calls
Huawei Watch 4 Pro is capable of showing you the notifications you get on your phone, so you can read messages which come through quickly with little to no delay. In fact, I was also able to reply to messages using the watch itself. This took some getting used to (typing on a screen that's barely two inches is not fun), but I did end up loving this feature, as it saved me from having to fish out my phone every other minute just to reply to texts.
Other than that, Huawei Watch 4 Pro allows you to make and take phone calls through the watch itself. Combined with the messaging feature, this meant that I barely had to take out my phone when in public. It should be noted that the microphone is clear in quiet areas, but not as clear in public. A tip would be to keep the watch closer to your mouth when talking outside when it's noisy.
Health
Like all smartwatches, the HUAWEI Watch 4 Pro is great for tracking your workouts and health indicators, including things like skin temperature, Sp02 reading, Stress Levels, Heartbeat, and others. Taking it one step further, you can use the Health Glance app in the watch to take all the readings above in one go, so you don’t need to switch between the apps to get complete readings. Health Glance is also able to read your sinus rhythm, but you will need to be in a quiet place as you have to cough into the watch’s microphone to check your respiratory health.
Sleeping with the Huawei Watch 4 Pro is pretty comfortable (apart from the fact that it's large and heavy), and it also has an accurate reading when it comes to getting the details of your sleep. On the watch, I could check how long I slept, and to know more about my sleeping activity, all the data is saved onto the Huawei Health app, which I could check through my phone.
The watch also reminds you when you are inactive, it also motivates you to take more steps if you haven’t taken as many the week before. On a daily basis, you will be reminded to get up from sitting and move around, which is something I appreciated since it would also help me in ensuring I don’t spend too much time seated.
Fitness
Huawei Watch 4 Pro doesn't fall short when it comes to keeping your physical health in check. It comes with multiple workouts, including running, indoor running, hiking, golf and others. For running you can go to the health app and get a pre-made plan, that you can sync to the smartwatch and workout. On the app, you can also get monthly challenges to sync to your watch when you want to push yourself.
The smartwatch also has an Auto Detect Workout, which is turned off by default. It even has custom workouts that you can use if you want to create your own routine when you find that you can burn through the app’s routines.
In fact, thanks to the 5 ATM and Diving-level Water Resistance, you can even track your swimming sessions with the Watch! The Swim mode in the Workout app which can measure how long and how far you were swimming. If you’re swimming in open waters, this watch also measures your distance through its GPS. Which reminds me...
GPS
The Huawei Watch 4 Pro also has a built-in GPS, which means you can get directions to wherever you want to walk or cycle. This is available through the Petal Maps app on the smartwatch. The best part is I don’t even need WiFi or internet access to use this GPS; just Bluetooth.
One thing I did not like about this smartwatch, is that I was not able to sync or control songs from Spotify, even when it was connected to my phone. But if you have songs downloaded onto your phone, you can sync and listen to them through the watch, or listen to some of the songs that are on the smartwatch itself.
Battery and Charging
When testing the Huawei Watch 4 Pro, I was able to squeeze 4 days where it was still at 27% battery before I caved in and charged it. On their website, Huawei states that you can get 4.5 days of battery, which sounds pretty much on par with my experience. Another thing that amazed me was how fast it charged. In just less than an hour, I had a fully charged watch.
Huawei also states that with Ultra-long Battery Life mode, you can get up to 12 days of battery in typical usage. The only issue with Ultra-long Battery Life mode is that you are not able to use internet-related features like weather and you won’t get notifications from your phone. However, I did notice that the watch seemed faster to navigate when in Ultra-long Battery Life mode.
