If you have been paying attention over the past year, you must have heard about the Samsung Galaxy S22 and its superb camera capabilities; but did you know that it’s also the first Samsung flagship to have the S Pen built into the phone after the brand stopped their Note line?
If you didn’t, well, now you know. The Galaxy S22 has been dubbed one of the best Android phones for productivity, and the S Pen is the biggest reason.
Here’s all the features we loved on the Galaxy S22 Ultra that was only made possible by the S Pen.

Our Top Five Favourite S Pen Features
1. Screen Off Memo
Writing notes on your phone with a stylus is quick and easy enough as it is, but the Screen Off Memo feature makes it even more convenient.
With this feature, you won’t need to unlock your phone to jot down quick notes. In fact, you don’t even need to turn on the screen. All you have to do is pop out the S Pen from the bottom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and start writing!
2. Air Actions
An S Pen staple, the Air Action feature allows you to use the S Pen to navigate around your screen without needing to touch it. Essentially, it turns your stylus into a magic wand for your phone!
Apart from the default actions, you can also enable and disable actions for specific apps, including the Camera app and Music app. From snapping pictures to zooming in by waving your Pen, this feature puts the “fun” in “functionality”.
3. Screen Write
Took a meme-worthy screenshot? With the S Pen, you can now write directly onto your screenshot or any image you want!
You can also add annotations and text to your photos in your own handwriting or draw extra illustrations and share them.
4. Live Messages
Apart from annotating your photos, you create brand-new videos or GIFs in your own handwriting.
To use this feature, just pull out the S Pen, select Live Message, and doodle away. You can even add your own videos, images, or GIFs to the background of your doodles to make them more interesting!
5. Notes App + S Pen
The Samsung Notes App was already a powerful notetaking app, but the S Pen takes it to another level.
With the S Pen, you no longer need to stab painstakingly at the tiny on-screen keyboard — you can write them down instead! And if you’re worried about your bad handwriting, the app has a solution for that. It can turn handwritten notes into text for easy reading!
Plus, you can also open up PDFs, images, and other files in the Notes app, and then use the S Pen to highlight, annotate, draw, or even sign the documents.
The inclusion of the S pen in the Galaxy S22 Ultra was a great move on Samsung’s part. Now that we’re looking forward to the next generation of S Series flagships, will the new phones have the S Pen as well?
According to the dummy models circulating online, the answer is yes. The new Galaxy Ultra model has a slot for the S Pen as well, though unfortunately, it seems like the base and Plus model will still have to go without the versatile stylus.
Then again, these are just dummy models. Maybe Samsung will have some surprises in store for us in the upcoming launch!
