Nearly One Year Later: Is the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Still Worth It?

Will you be playing the waiting game, or will you just go for it?

How time flies; it’s been almost a year since Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy S22 series including the flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra back in February 2022. In fact, the Galaxy S22 Ultra was where all the hype was: it’s big (at an imposing 6.8 inches!), exquisitely designed with plenty of exciting features and of course, it comes with an S Pen for the first time ever!

So, What’s Up with Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra These Days?

Before we get to the part about why Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is still worth checking out, the South Korean tech giant has recently rolled out its One UI 5.0 update for the latest Android 13 version. That means you’ll get to enjoy cool upgrades like personalised lock screens, multiple-theme dynamic lock screens, adjustable colour palettes and a smart text recognition feature called Extract Text.

And yes, this update will be rolling out to Galaxy S22 users as well. Samsung has promised at least 4 generations of software updates plus five years of security updates. So I guess this is one down, three more to go!

Now, the Ultra Reasons You Should Consider the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra…

Bigger Screen

A smartphone with a larger screen may not be for everybody, particularly if you have small hands. But having one has its advantages, including easier viewing and of course, a better experience when it comes to streaming videos and playing mobile games. The stunning Dynamic AMOLED 2X Quad HD+ 6.8-inch display even comes with added curved edges, giving the S22 Ultra a distinctly premium look!

Built to Last

Protection matters when it comes to owning a phone. And this is especially true for S22 Ultra, as it comes equipped with a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+.

As if that’s not enough, the S22 Ultra is also reinforced with a durable frame called Armor Aluminium Frame, which turns out to be Samsung’s strongest aluminium frame ever incorporated into its smartphone line!

Capture Like a Pro

The biggest highlight of the S22 Ultra has to be its quad-camera setup. You get an impressive 108MP main camera, which is also doubled as a wide-angle shooter. This allows you to shoot images that are sharp and detailed and if you need to capture your subject up close, you can optically zoom your camera up to 10x.

Planning to shoot wide? Well, the S22 Ultra got you covered here with its 12MP ultra-wide camera lens. Let’s not forget about its telephoto lens and the 40MP selfie camera for selfie lovers out there.

The S22 Ultra performs well at night too with its nifty Nightography, offering a large 2.4-micron pixel sensor capable of letting in more light than other like-minded smartphones in the market. This means you’ll get brighter-looking images even in low-light conditions with minimum-to-zero image noise.

More Juice

A bigger phone means a bigger battery and the S22 Ultra doesn’t disappoint with its built-in 5,000mAh Li-Ion battery capacity. It can last through the day under moderate use. Even if you are a heavy user, you can get by around 6-7 hours top – a notable feat, considering such a power-hungry phone like S22 Ultra. The phone supports fast charging too using a 45W Power Adapter that can give you nearly 70% in just 30 minutes!

It Got the Power!

The power in question refers to the S22 Ultra’s incredible processor of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It’s fast and responsive, allowing you to enjoy a seamless user experience – smoother scrolling and being able to handle multitasking such as opening multiple apps and Google Chrome tabs.

For gamers out there, expect a buttery-smooth gaming performance with the S22 Ultra’s 120Hz refresh rate while the 1,750-nit peak brightness and Samsung’s Vision Booster technology means you can enjoy your favourite gameplay even in direct sunlight.

The Mighty S Pen

The S22 Ultra comes with an integrated S Pen (read: you don’t have to fork out extra moolah to own it separately) and the good news is, it’s an ultra-powerful beauty of a stylus. Pull it out from the bottom left of the S22 Ultra and you will have an S Pen that is slim, light and versatile.

It’s more responsive too at 70% faster with low latency and supports over 4,000 levels of pressure, meaning you can write and scribble on the phone screen with a less-to-zero hiccup. Not to forget, it’s comfortable to hold and feels like you are writing with a usual physical ballpen.

So, back to the question: is the Samsung Galaxy S22 still worth buying now, or should you wait for the next one?

If you’re seriously considering this question, then no doubt you’ve heard of all the rumours and speculations on the upcoming Galaxy. 200MP cameras, the newest and fastest processors, bigger batteries… the problem is, these are all just speculations. We can’t even be sure if the next Galaxy phone will be called the Galaxy S23. Maybe Samsung will decide to pull a Note and jump straight to the S30, or something along those lines; we really don’t know.

There will always be a next one, so if you are really in the market for a new phone, you really can’t go wrong with the current Galaxy S22 Series. As it stands, the Galaxy S22 is one of the best Android phone money can buy right now, perfect for multitasking and heavy productivity.

Then again, there’s nothing wrong with waiting for the next one either; the next Galaxy phone is rumoured to be even more powerful than the current one, so expectations are high. The launch date is speculated to be in early February, just as the S22 was launched in February this year, so either way, you won’t have too long to wait until your next new phone.
