The sub-RM1000 smartphone industry is booming, as more and more people start looking for cheaper alternatives to serve as their daily drivers. While these devices typically compromise on certain aspects to meet the price range, that doesn’t mean that the performance is necessarily bad.
The OPPO A77s is one of the best examples of “cheap but good” — and here’s our full review of the phone.

Build & Design
Our review unit was the Starry Black, which looks amazing. The matte finish on the back cover not only looks sleek but also feels great in hand.
The volume rockers are located on the right side of the phone, while the power button is located on the left, along with the 3.5mm headphone jack and the Type-C charging port.
The phone strikes a good balance between being lightweight yet still feeling solid and sturdy when holding it. It's a little thicker than expected, which some people may find a bit more on the “blocky” side, but personally, I liked the design.
Display
One of the key highlights of the phone is its 6.56” display with 90Hz refresh rate. The OPPO A77s has a screen-to-body ratio of 84.2%, allowing for a more immersive experience. I’ve enjoyed every moment of looking at the screen, be it playing games, watching videos, or just browsing Instagram.
Plus, the bright colours make viewing content on the phone refreshing and easy on the eyes.
Performance
When we first got this phone, we wanted to find out how well a sub-RM1000 phone fares with gaming. For this test, we ran the OPPO A77s on three different games: Asphalt 9, Wild Rift, and Apex Mobile.
Off the bat, the visuals looked amazing – just a huge blast of bright colours, creating an immersive experience on the phone. With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680, the phone barely lags, creating a seamless gaming experience.
Even when it does lag a little, the RAM expansion, which takes idle ROM and converts it into usable RAM, helps to cover the computing power it needs, so apart from a slight stutter, everything still worked smoothly.
The stereo speaker system was also quite clear and helped when playing first-person shooter games like Apex, as I could clearly hear the approaching footsteps of my enemies.
Battery
The 5000 mAh battery on the OPPO A77s is pretty much the industry standard nowadays. The battery life is also pretty standard, as the phone can last you a day on heavy usage and a day and a half on regular usage with minimal gaming.
Charging-wise, the A77s has a great feature that limits charging speed if you leave it charging overnight. The system will identify your waking times and control the speed so that your phone will reach 100% right before you wake up, so that you can avoid overcharging and damaging your phone’s battery.
Charging speed is quick too — it only takes about an hour to get to full charge.
