The number of people working and studying remotely over the past two years has gone up drastically. As a result, most have grown more dependent on digital screens than ever before.
Whether it's typing out a document through their monitor, watching a movie on the laptop or just scrolling through the phone, our eyes are at risk of being exposed to a dangerously high amount of Blue Light, found on all digital screens.
This is where BenQ comes in.
BenQ's new GW2785TC monitor aims to amend things by introducing a slew of features not only designed to enhance your viewing experience such as with a 75Hz Full HD IPS display but also for your optical health.
The BenQ GW2785TC series was purposely built for remote workers and students who need to spend most of their time in front of a screen.
Its 27-inch Full HD IPS display is not only a treat to the eyes; it's also built with several Eye Care features that prioritizes your optical health by reducing blue light and automatically dimming the brightness depending on lighting conditions, thus reducing eye strain and allowing the viewer to stay focused on the task at hand. Not only that, but the USB-C display allows you to plug in any compatible desktop, laptop, tablet, or even smartphone.
For other features such as the adjustable neck stand for monitor angling as well as including a microphone with noise cancellation, the BenQ GW2785TC series is primed to help you stay comfortable without any risks of reducing your body's health whenever and wherever you work.
Watch our video team's explanation on the topic below:
There are several Eye-Care features on this monitor to protect your eyes from constant flickering and blue light. It can even adjust the screen for those suffering from colour blindness!
But just how much can such a monitor, let alone a technology itself, prove its worth and genuineness? To better understand and answer everything about the health benefits of such a monitor, we turn to Dr. Abirami; an eye specialist based in Penang who has had over 10 years of experience in the field.
About Blue Light - Dangerous?
'Blue light' is a term we hear often. What is it exactly?
Dr. Abirami: "As far as the range of light goes, we have a spectrum of colour, which I'm sure everyone's familiar with the rainbow colours. It ranges from the red to the blue, and the blue light stays on the higher end of the spectrum, which is almost into the non-visible light.”
What is dangerous about it? Why does it have such a negative stigma attached to it?
Dr. Abirami: “So the blue light itself has a very short wavelength. In general, we relate a short wavelength light with higher energy. Compared to red light, which has a much longer wavelength, the energy is not as strong. From here, blue light is special in the sense that it can penetrate through all layers, meaning it can reach up to the retina.”
Blue light is found in almost all digital displays. Does that mean it's unsafe to stare at our screens?
Dr. Abirami: “In essence, the harm comes from prolonged exposure such as staring at the screen all day, which we do a lot. With blue light, there are some studies that said you can actually damage your retina from it.
The retina is important because it basically takes the light signal processes and converts them into neural signals, sending them to the brain so that it can process what you're seeing. This means any damage to your retina is obviously not good news.”
Brightness Intelligence Plus - How Does It Help?
So how can changing the settings based on lighting conditions help with reducing blue light?
Dr. Abirami: “If you're talking about blue light effect radiating when the screen is too bright, yes, the amount of blue light will be more excessive which is why you need to condition the monitor to suit the surrounding. You can adjust the monitor brightness to mimic the surrounding (for a more comfortable visual experience)."
Would a monitor that automatically brightens or dims the display help then?
Dr. Abirami: “(It would). Because otherwise, you have to mimic and do it manually as well as correctly. It'll mainly (benefit) those who use the screen for long hours. If I'm going to use (it) for one hour, then it doesn't really matter much. But if you're going to from day to night, or (if) you are in a place where the room condition changes (frequently) and all that then yeah, you (have the) added benefit.”
Anything other tips help us reduce eye strains or issues?
Dr. Abirami: “If you're going to hold a device, or even a book, (it's important to) know to keep it at arm's distance. So that's about 50 to 60 centimetres. (Technically, that's the) optimum distance, because any closer than your eyes will have to squint (and experience) discomfort. Any further then you don't have to strain to look at things clearly.”
Colour Weakness Mode - How and Why?
Please explain more on colourblindness; is it more than just seeing things in black and white?
Dr. Abirami: “(Color blindness) is a misnomer, and when you (talk about) colourblindness, everybody perceives it as (one that) cannot see colours. Actually, they can see colours, but what they see is different from what others see. (To cut the stigma), they can see a certain (spectrum of) colours.”
BenQ’s Color Weakness Mode uses a filter to change the colour onscreen. Would it actually help colourblindness?
Dr. Abirami: “So if a monitor is going to have a filter that can help them see better in terms of the colours, then it's helpful because it's not (just seeing) grayscale or black and white, they still see some colours. It's (actually) nice if they get a filter that helps them to see better.”
6 Reasons To Buy: BenQ GW2785TC Monitor
For a monitor like the BenQ GW2785TC with features to help reduce strains and discomfort to your eyes, it's seemingly a good and reasonable addition to your workspace. Of course, its key defining features aren't just down to the eye care part, but also how it benefits most users such as young professionals and their family members.
Brightness Intelligence Plus Technology:
The BenQ GW2785TC monitor is built with Brightness Intelligence Plus Technology. It's not a typical feature you would find on a monitor. Similar to your phones, the BenQ monitor will detect the brightness of your surroundings and configure your display accordingly. How this was made possible is through the light sensor in the monitor.
But it doesn’t just anyhow change the brightness. In fact, it also considers the colour temperature of the screen.
When it comes to your optical health, adjusting your computer screen whether you’re in a warmly lit room or under fluorescent office lighting is important to help reduce eye strains.
Colour Weakness:
Just like the Brightness Intelligence Plus Technology, another cool feature under the BenQ GW2785TC monitor's belt is its Colour Weakness Mode. This is not us nitpicking its bad colour, but rather the fact that it's a technology system that caters to aid people who suffer from colourblindness.
How this mode works is that the monitor will employ a suitable filter over the screen according to the type of colourblindness that the user has. This way, the colours they see are just as colourful as those without colourblindness.
Multiple Modes:
If you didn't know, not all screens are made equal for a comfortable reading experience. This is why devices like the Amazon Kindle, an e-ink tech product, exists as the screen makes it easy for the eyes to read for long hours.
Who are we kidding by trying to reduce our screen time? Aside from taking frequent breaks away from your computers, BenQ has incorporated a Multiple Mode that essentially works to reduce flickering of screens as well as calibration for Coding Mode.
With these modes, you can enjoy the likes of enhanced productivity such as in the form of reading long documents with texts for an extended time without straining your eyes.
USB-C connectivity:
USB-C is quickly becoming the next universal port to be found on all devices, so it's no surprise that this BenQ series not only comes with an HDMI 1.4 port, Displayport 1.4 IN and OUT, but also a USB-C port that outputs 60W charging.
This means that not only can you connect an external display to your laptop, but you can also charge it at the same time, either freeing you up one port or saving you from having to buy a USB-C dock.
Plus with the abundance of ports on the back of the monitor, you can daisy chain multiple displays to get the screen real estate you need.
Microphone With Noise Cancellation:
BenQ once again offers a feature that isn’t normally found in a monitor and this time in the form of a noise-cancelling microphone.
In the age of remote working, it’s vital to not only have a decent webcam but also a respectable microphone. The noise-cancelling feature allows you to block out the ambient sound in the background to deliver a crisper clearer voice. And if you ever need it, there’s a dedicated microphone button on the front of your monitor that can deactivate the mic with a simple press.
Adjustable Built:
The monitor also has an adjustable viewing angle, allowing you to change its height, tilt, pivot, and swivel. So whether it's you or your child sitting in front of the monitor, you can easily change the viewing angle of the monitor to better suit your height and posture.
