FAQ:

- How to install wired security cameras

Thinking of installing the wired security cameras yourself? Maybe you want to save on the installation cost or simply love a little DIY challenge. Either way, here is a step-by-step guide on how to install wired security cameras.

a) Determine your location

First, you need to figure out where you want to install the wired security cameras. Typically, you might want to consider the front and/or back doors because burglars tend to break in at either of these common spots.

b) Gather all the right tools for installation

Okay, once you have decided on the location, you are going to need a few tools to begin the installation process. This usually involves drilling a hole in the wall or ceiling to fit the security cameras (a hammer drill would be an ideal choice).

Remember to mark the hole that you want to drill using a pencil as a rough guideline. Also, don’t forget to drill a big hole so the cables can easily pass through it.

c) Pass the cables through the holes

Once you are done drilling the holes for your cameras, you need to pass the cables through them. Got fish tape at home? It’s particularly helpful for pulling the cables or wires through the likes of walls or ceilings. You’ll need an extra pair of hands to assist you with this.

d) Run the cable to the DVR box

Once you are done with that, you need to route all of them to the DVR box. To accomplish this, you are required to use a hammer drill to make holes through the walls or ceilings.

Mind you, it’s not as easy as it may seem. So, if you are unsure about this, it’s best to call someone who you know is good at it.

You probably need to rely on fish tape to pull those cables through every wall or ceiling. And this includes taping the cables to the fish tape, pulling them through and removing them. The process is going to be pretty tedious and repetitive before the cables finally reach their destination.

- How to remotely view security cameras using the internet

Assuming you are away from your home, you probably want to stream footage from your security cameras remotely using the internet. How do you make it happen? Well, there are generally two ways you can do it.

a) Manufacturer’s app or client software

The first method is the easiest way of all since; using the manufacturer’s App or Client software means you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues. All you have to do is to follow these 3 simple steps.

Step 1: Start by downloading the manufacturer’s App or Client software to your phone or PC/laptop

Step 2: Launch the app and key in the unique ID number (UID) to add your security camera device

Step 3: Finally, click your security camera on the App or software and from there, you view it over the internet outside your home network

b) Port forwarding

If you prefer an alternative solution, you can try setting up your security camera for remote viewing using the port forwarding method. The steps include:

Step 1: Locate the IP address of your security camera. You can usually find it on your security camera’s software device settings under Network Status.

Step 2: Check the WAN/External IP address of your router by using the DDNS service to configure your security camera over the internet for remote viewing

Step 3: Check the security camera’s port numbers & forward ports to the router. Keep in mind that if you have two security cameras on your network and you plan to view both of them remotely, make sure you use the different port numbers

Once you get the HTTP port and RTMP port from the security camera device settings, you need to configure it for remote viewing to log into your router’s web interface. From there, you can set up the port forwarding rules or commands.

Step 4: Finally, type in the URL address (WAN IP address & the port number). For instance, if your WAN IP address is 183.35.156.123 and the port number is 8002, you should enter http://183.35.156.123:8002. You will then be able to view your security camera online remotely.

- How long do security cameras keep footage?

First, it depends on the types of storage systems used (DVRs/servers, hard drives, SD cards or cloud storage) and the amount of storage space available on the storage systems mentioned above.

To keep up with all your security and surveillance footage, a security camera may need quite a lot of storage space. So, in order to keep making space for new footage, the camera typically only keeps old footage up to 90 days. The outdated surveillance footage will be automatically deleted to clear the storage space for new surveillance footage.

Please note that different factors may affect this duration, from the setup for individual cameras to preferential settings and type of storage system.

- How many security cameras do I need?

Frankly, there is no clear answer for this because it all depends on your personal needs and preferences. For instance, if you live in an apartment or a smaller home, a single doorbell camera might be sufficient.

However, if you live on a larger property that also includes an outdoor setting, you might need to install several security cameras. Among common areas you should place them are the entryways & hallways, living rooms, family rooms, kitchens and the backyard.
