FAQ

- LCD vs OLED

  • Technology

Generally, LCDs are transmissive as they require a backlight for illuminating their pixels. You can find most LCDs are implementing “edge lighting” where the LEDs surround the side of the display and not behind it. Fired through a matrix, the light from the LEDs feeds it through the RGB pixels and into our eyes.

For OLED, the pixels are called “self-emissive” in which the light of the display is controlled on a pixel-y-pixel basis.

  • Brightness

Brightness is a vital parameter in display technology. When referring to the datasheet, you can find brightness measured in the unit of “nits”. The visual impact is greater when the level of brightness is higher. Typically, LCD screens can go brighter than OLED, more suitable to use under bright lighting.

  • Contrast

Due to the backlight in LCD technology, you can easily notice that parts of a purely black image arent’s black in a dark room. The unwanted backlighting greatly affects the contrast of an LCD screen. On the other side, no light is produced when an OLED screen goes black. Its contrast is higher, thus is best suited for use in darker rooms.

- What is OLED technology

A device’s display relies on a set of technologies to enhance the reproduction of images for the system. For OLED technology (organic light-emitting diode), it uses a different mixture of organic compounds including carbon and other elements to colour each pixel singularly on the screen.

So when a device is turned on, each pixel lights up or turn off individually according to what the picture calls for. This all translates to visuals with a higher contrast, high brightness, and great colour fidelity.
